Seventh Grade Reading List
This is the reading list used for summer reading suggestions
and for required outside reading assignments for the seventh grade.
The catalog links are for copies kept in the Reading List section of
the Teen Area.

Absolutely Normal Chaos - Sharon Creech
- Students who enjoyed Walk Two Moons will likely enjoy this
sequel-of-sorts. The novel takes the form of a journal written by a girl
for an English class.

All Creatures Great and Small - James Herriot
- Herriot tells the amazing, funny and sad true tales of
his life as a veterinarian in rural England.

An American Childhood - Annie Dillard
- In short essays and stories, Dillard recounts growing
up in Pittsburgh during the 1950s.

Antigone - Sophocles
- This classic Greek tragedy features a young woman who
can no longer sit quietly in the face of injustice.

A Fire in My Hands - Gary Soto
- Available by request.
This book not only collects poems by Soto, it also includes commentary
by, and an interview with, the author.

Hoops - Walter Dean Myers
- This novel looks realistically at the dreams of a
group of African-American boys hoping to pursue careers playing
basketball.

Nectar in a Sieve - Kamala Markandaya
- Cultures clash in this tale about the strain between
people in rural and urban India.

Nemesis - Agatha Christie
- Christie's famous detective Ms. Marple tackles another
(initially) baffling case.

The Prince and the Pauper - Mark Twain
- A royal child and a child of the streets trade places
and learn a great deal about each other's world and perspective.

The Sea Wolf - Jack London
- Thrilling adventures on the high seas occur when the
narrator is taken hostage aboard a working ship.

The Talking Earth - Jean Craighead George
- An adolescent Native American girl must decide whether
to accept or reject what her culture says about nature and
spirituality.

The View From Saturday - E.L. Konigsburg
- A group of sixth grade students bond with their
teacher as they compete in an academic bowl.

Woodsong - Gary Paulsen
- While autobiographical, this book isn't a typical life
story. Paulsen describes his experiences learning to train dogs and
eventually running in the Iditarod dog sled race.
